Uptown Community Education Councils (CECs) and Community Board (CB) Education Committees, charged with advancing our community’s educational interests, regularly make decisions that will shape our educational landscape for years to come, not to mention their ability to focus community, political, and media attention on important education issues.

We all want our young people to achieve their goals and dreams and ultimately help our community reach its full potential. That can happen only when we choose to be present and actively involved as decisions are made about our children’s learning opportunities. No one else will ensure that children in our community receive ALL of the high-quality educational experiences they need and to which they’re entitled. As Uptowners, that’s our collective responsibility and our shared opportunity.

Total Equity Now compiles and circulates monthly calendars of Uptown CECs and CB Education Committee meetings in order to help Uptowners guide and participate in the work of these bodies. Whether you’re a parent, student, educator, or some other concerned and committed Uptowner, you have the power to strengthen and expand educational opportunities in our community.

This should go without saying, but our schools, community-based organizations, grassroots groups, faith-based institutions, community businesses, and other entities do and should play vital roles, too. No one individual, group, or institution can handle this responsibility alone. It really does take a village.
